Leavin on a Jet Plane...

...don't know when I'll be back again. I leave for India tomorrow. Have been looking forward to this day for a while now! Countless wonderful memories associated with my stay in the US. Maybe I should dedicate a blog just for them :).

I have been wanting to sing Kesariya Balma from "Lekin" for a while now but never had the confidence to post it here! And honestly, the recording sounded quite awful when I first tried singing it. Then I discovered that hearing a super pitchy song of yourself can work wonders on the frequency and duration of your practice sessions ha ha. So I kept singing this song, so much so that even my husband could sort of sing the alaap in the first antara just listening to me sing it over and over and over. I don't even want to think how irritated my neighbors are with me (good thing we are leaving). Coming to the song. It is in Maand based on the Rajasthani folk song Kesariya Balma, padharo mharo des. The lyrics for the song in "Lekin" are written by Gulzar and the music is by Hridayanath Mangeshkar. He is a wonderful composer and thanks to my friends I have been introduced to his beautiful compositions in Marathi. And of course who else but Lata ji could sing something so complicated with so much ease. Her voice just flows in this song. Here is my first attempt at singing this beautiful song (in the public domain that is). Do listen when you have time and do not hesitate to provide constructive criticism (that too works wonders on the practice sessions ha ha). This blog may not be very active in the next month or two, but I will definitely resume practising, singing and listening once I am all settled. Thanks for all the support :).

Came on Anup's recommendation (Mad Max). Was well worth it. Very nice rendition ! some more certainty may help in places like the mini aalaap at 2:39

Thank you all for listening and commenting.

Smitha: Thanks for both the comments. Am really happy you liked it. Will miss you too. Thanks to the internet we can continue our chat sessions/music discussions.

Paras: Thanks for your generous comments. Am so happy you liked it. Yes, have moved for good. But will be in touch through the blog world.

Pooja: Thanks a lot. Glad you liked my attempt. btw.. had a good flight home :).

Pravin: Thanks a lot for the constant encouragement. Will definitely keep this blog active once I am all settled.

Deblina: Thanks a lot. Am really happy that you loved it.

Anup: Thanks for your nice comments. Really appreciate it. Also, thanks for the good wishes. I really need it!!

Murali: Thanks for visiting my blog and listening. I am glad you felt it was worth your time :). And you are 100% correct about me being hesitant with the mini alaap. I was getting it sort-of right only about 80% of the time so was super conscious while recording. But yes, I am motivated to practise more so that I can sing it with confidence and ease (still a long way to go...)

Krishnan Sir: Thank you so much for your nice comments. Am really glad you liked it.

Soumitra: Thanks a lot for listening and commenting. Yes, practise would definitely enhance it. I wanted to post this before I left hence left it as is.

Nandita, very nice modulations! Really liked your singing of this song. A little bit more involvement in the song, in terms of emotions, would have done even more wonders! Good work!

Wow ... you definately have talent. So I suppose you didn't need the CD I gave you then. ;) Keep singing. It sounds great!

if u do not know hindi..i want to say..
you sing well....mindblowing.....

Chaturvedi ji: Bahut shukriya. Am really happy you enjoyed this song.

Thanks for singing 'Kesariya Balma', its my all-time favorite, just mind-freshner.
About your recording, I really felt that you sung this song well, especially the aalap and the finer aspects of the song came very well. However I feel that the karaoke was not that compatible to your voice quality. The karaoke track seemed quite dull to me. In fact, you should have recorded without any karaoke, that would have sounded cool.
Thanks!!!

Nandita M said...

Thanks Rahul. Glad you liked it. I don't think I have enough courage to post Kesariya without karaoke :). Maybe I will try that after some more practise sessions.
